Do you know a volunteer firefighter? One may live in the house next door. Or in the apartment upstairs. Ready to help. Here in the Franconia and Kingstowne communities of Northern Virginia, there are dozens of dedicated volunteers -- trained to a professional level -- working hundreds of hours every year to answer your call, sometimes in the middle of the night.
Surprised? Don't be. Even in a county as big as Fairfax, your friends and neighbors have a role to play. In a unique partnership with the career professionals of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, who staff fire stations county-wide 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, members of the Franconia Volunteer Fire Department donate thousands of hours responding to medical emergencies, car accidents, fire calls and other incidents.
Make no mistake: career firefighters staff Franconia Fire Stations 5 and 37, all day, every day, without so much as an extra penny from you. But last year our volunteers worked some 23,000 hours right here at home, supplementing the career staff. The volunteers also provide hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of equipment and support every year...equipment that goes to work in your community.
